Hypnosis helps pole vaulter reach new heights

Australian Steve Hooker cleared 5.9m yesterday to take the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, Autralia's first gold in athletics since 2000. Hooker credits his success to hypnotherapy which helped him overcome his fear of vaulting and taught him effective visualisation, which he used to visualise himself in the Bird's Nest stadium leading up to the games. Hooker's much improved confidence has him knowing what the result will be before he's even started his run-up.

Over the weekend, 19-year old American Vincent Hancock took gold in the Olympic Skeet in Beijing. Hancock ended up in a shoot-off with Norwegian Tore Brovold, and went on to win when Brovold was the first to miss. The US team's sports psychologist, Daniel Vitchoff, credited Hancock's calmness and intensity to the psychologist's use of hypnosis to teach him how to relax, control his emotions and stay positive.
